VOXEL EDITOR

https://www.varesewedding.com/s7ep9dosj The components of the QUBLAR board game are all voxel based and therefore you’ll need to work with a voxel editor software to create new content for the game. There are a few different voxel-editors available and some of them are free, have a trial version available or offer a paid versions with more features. We create our content with a software called https://www.plantillaslago.com/jawq1mls Qubicle Constructor by Mindesk  (free & paid) as we found it the most advanced tool for our needs. Other editors are VoxelShop by BlackFlux (free) or MagicaVoxel by Gltracy (free). There are also a few web based and smartphone/tablet apps available but most of them lack of exporting features.

See what editor suits you best and start playing around with it until you get an idea how navigation and editing is handled. The developers have usually great resources like manuals and tutorials on their webpages available so you can learn the software. All the settings and tool tips shown here in this guide are taken in Qubicle Constructor but should be adoptable to other editors as well.

GENERAL MODELING TIPS

Usually designing monsters or other game components is easier when you have a vague idea in your mind and know what you want to create. Also a quick sketch on paper or drawing directly in the voxel editor by “blocking out” some general proportions might help you to find the right form for your imagined monster design. Another approach that could suits you best, is to work subtractive by starting from a big block made out of voxels and remove “material” to shape your creature. As mentioned, just play around with your editor and i can assure you it will be fun and you’ll make fast progress with creating awesome new content for QUBLAR.

A few tips that might help you on your journey:

  • Make each voxel count! Sounds simple, but keep in mind that each voxel will add up to the printing time and material usage.
  • A monsters silhouette should be identifiable at first glance.
  • Highlight details by making them recessed or raised in your design.
  • Less is more! – Use bright and fully saturated colors only for a few details and try to keep the coloring in a coherent color palette.
  • A characters value (range from lightness to darkness) should generally shift from darkest at feet/lower body to lightest at upper body and head. This helps to draw the players eye to the most important areas of the character.
  • Be aware that not everybody will play your figure painted or 3d-printed in color. Try to test how a simple mono-color ABS or PLA print of your monster will look like. Make a copy of your model and ink it one single color to see if the design would loose important details that you only have “painted” on your model.
